In his LinuxInsider column, Paul Murphy explores the real cost of Linux to
organizations. While Microsoft claims that "Linux isn't a cheaper form of
Windows," Murphy argues that a "direct substitution" of operating systems
fails to capture the total benefits of using open source. It is the long-term
cost, as opposed to a single capital cost that offers the true value of
Linux. Murphy explains that the key benefit for an organzation that moves to
Linux is found when defenestrating Windows -- and the acceptance of the open
source Linux paradigm.
