Stuart:
I can think of a couple of ways:
You could use a program like After Effects.
You could dissolve the letters a few frames after an explosion clip starts.
This method would require the least financial investment. (AE and a couple of clips)
This method wouldn't look perfect, but it might get you by.
The better, and much more expensive way, and the way that I think that the
movie makers probably did it:
Contract someone that uses a 3D CGI program (Max, Maya, LightWave, etc.)
Have them model the text, then apply volumetrics (fire, explosions, etc.)
Give them storyboards depicting the motion of the text.
They can render out an animation in just about any format that you can think of.
This animation could be used as your lead-in title or end-credit animation
NOTE:
I've used LightWave 3D for over 6 years.
The effects that you mentioned wouldn't be that dificult to do.
It would just be the problem of ponying up the dough to pay the animator.
Unfortunately, considering the cost of these 3D programs (2,000.00 to 20,000),
and the number of years that it takes to learn the programs, 3D work isn't cheap,
but it would give the best results.
