Dear RR,
"the picture sort of vibrated" did you try the flicker removal? I always use flicker 
removal on still images. (right click the clip and the go into field options -flicker 
removal) I need to think about it and try it out a bit later.

Thanks for your reply!  I heard from Taky who also suggested 
rendering. I did this and also tried changing the size and format of 
the photo.  So far nothing has worked.  

Just for kicks, I went ahead and exported my whole project as a 
movie.  When it got to the gradient wipe, I could see both the wipe 
and the picture during the transition.  The picture sort of vibrated 
as the gradient wipe passed through it.

I must be doing something wrong...just can't get a handle on it.
