There are two ways to import analogue video into a PC - the best involves
an analogue to digital converter like a digital video camcorder or
conversion device, such as are marketed by Dazzle, Canopus, and others.
These accept RCA and usually S-Video connections from the analogue source
and firewire out to the computer. The lesser quality approach (in most
cases) involves RCA, and sometimes S-Video into your graphics card, at the
back of your PC. You can tell your graphics card from other PCI cards
because it's the one your monitor is plugged into. This is usually reduced
in frame size, usually to 320 X 240, or about half of DV resolution. You
can play with this quality level, make web video or email video from it but
you can't make decent VHS or DVD material out of it. If you're serious
about video quality you need a decent converter so that you can capture
720X480 (pixel) files. That's assuming you are in NTSC land, such as North
America. The dimensions differ slightly in PAL. Also, the S-Video
connection is video only. You still need the red/white RCAs for audio,
although some consumer equipment provides only one port for audio, or even
one cable for all three. That sometimes causes confusion for newcomers to
the process. And starting out, it isn't hard to be confused!
