Hi! I would be very careful with compression, I run a sound recording studio, use premiere for some video-work on the side. I have found the compressors in premiere to be not too good, not too bad either. Some compressors/levellers will adjust the volume nice and smooth, you almost cannot hear the compressor in the finished material. Others you can hear a lot more, you get "pumping", "metallic" character in the sound, lotsa noise etc. Premiere has got the two latter ones if youre not very careful.
Ofcourse, settings are the key, combined with the internal algoritm of the plugin youre using. Best I have found in software, is Waves RCL. But premiere doesnt like this one. Settings I use, is shortest possible attack, 5 seconds release, ratio from 1,5 to 10. Have to use your ears here, listen to what is best. Threshold I set so that the compressor always "touch" the sound. But: I wouldnt do this with a shorter release. Using such a short attack, I also compress "s" and "t" etc in a big way. If you like those letters to pass the compressor almost untouched, set attack to from 15ms to 60 ms. See if you find any info on the net about audio dynamics, levelling. Levelling is a sort of compression, but a "careful" one. Using premieres own compressor and multiband compressor, I sometimes get some crazy distortion, in low mid to bass frequenzies. My two latest movies, I finished sound by exporting dialog track out of premiere, into sound forge , used waves noise reduction and RCL compressor in sound forge, saved audio, reimported to premiere. For the future I think I might do all soundwork in Pro Tools or Sonar, and leave only video up to premiere. When the project gets big in audio (10 - 20 tracks with plugins), I have more than too often found that premiere will not open the projetcs after a save, and that suddenly one track starts to distort in a big way, solution has been to kill all plugins, slide the audio of that track to another track, cross my fingers, and prepare for a long night of hazzle. Usually I get it sorted somehow. Well well, that was a mouthful I guess. Cheers, Paal At 10:56 20.01.2005, you wrote: >Better to put a insert-plug-in in your mixer.
