Here in corporate network land, our machines are locked down pretty tight.
Automatic codec installation is blocked, as is anything else that tries to
write to the OS directory. Each user can get a codec installed only if a
clear business purpose is given. Our latest official XP build will be
without Quicktime. If it doesn't play in the basic installation of WMP,
forget it.

If your videos are strictly entertainment, use whatever you like. If you
are targeting the corporate business world, be aware of potential end
viewer limitations.
