With dual-layer burners costing around $50 right now, I can't see any reason NOT to get one. You don't have to burn DL discs with them, and if you use 4x media it will generally burn the disc at 4x. I personally haven't had any problems that I could blame on the burn speed. It seems to me that I get more compatibility problems from using DVD+R media and burning software that doesn't put the 32K gaps between the IFO files that some standalones require.
Plus, manufacturers aren't upgrading the firmwares in 4x burners anymore, which means that any changes in write strategy for a particular type of media aren't incorporated. My personal opinion is that DL media will be gone completely in a year. It's just not cost-effective for media companies to make, and no one's buying it. Once blu-ray/hd-dvd come out, DL is going to be a lame duck. But, companies tend to put their newest tech together... so you get 16X DL burners. Justin On Mar 31, 2005 7:11 PM, Kenny D.
