I cant give you a highly technical explanation but it has to do with the
fact that jpegs are compressed where as bitmaps contain a non compromised
version (per se).
If you work with audio, sound software prefers to work with waves versus mp3
for similar reasons. The saving of disc space should not really be a
consideration these days with all the huge drives available. ps you may yet
get a better explanation.
