Interesting you mention that.
I found a forum or blog post mentioning that an older version of DivX
would crash Premiere if the audio was encoded as MP3. Just for grins I
re-encoded my MPEG but used PCM for the audio (that's essentially
uncompressed as I undertsand it). Now it seems to work fine.
Your mileage may vary.
