Do you know what's the error message when it crashes? The crashes codes
would tell you what type of issues it might be, there are a lot of
reason why it's crashing (based on what I've learned)
1. Power Supply is not sending enough juice, if you have 4 hard drives
(I have 3 plus a burner), I would suggest using a 450watts or higher for
it
2. Memory, believe it or not, sometimes, bad memory would give you issue
when you starts a video intensive area, you can use those memory testing
program (let it run for over 24 hours with the test) and you will know
if the memory is faulty or not.
3. Heat, overheating might be a cause, make sure there's plenty of air
flow (do not keep case open, I found out from a tech that the case
should be closed so the fan can do it's pulling/extracting work to keep
air flow moving...
4. Drivers, if your XP's drivers are not up to date (avoiding SP2), you
might have problem with driver conflict, so make sure you have latest
direct x drive, all your video card driver etc are up to date, etc.
5. Virtual memory setting, obviously if you can manually set it on a
drive that is for scratch disk usage (preview clips) then you should set
it the double amount what your memory would be, this would help
6. Drive's speed, hpefully you are using 7200rpm drives or due to 'lack'
of speed, it might crash
7. Scratch disk drive asssignment, make sure in Premiere, to have your
scratch disk assiend on a separate physical hard drive to help not
increase the drive head's data search...
Of course, might have to defrag?
See, there's a lot of reason a computer might not want to work, so be
patient and figure out why it crashes then you can know how to fix it
(look at the error messages and go from there), if the computer just
FREEZES, then it is most likely those points mentioned above (except for
7)...
(My computer would reboot if memory is faulty, it will reboot if the
power supply is less than 400watts... Etc)
