Thank you everyone for your advice! I applied most of the tweaks from
the video guys 'tweak' page and it didn't seem to resolve the problem.
I suspect it's something that I just have to live with on this set up.
The new problem is that when I capture video I have very quick audio
drop-out  on segments where people are singing (talking segments seem
fine). It is not the original source, because when I captured a second
time the drop-out was less frequent and in different spots. Has anyone
had this problem? Again, I suspect the culprit is my DV500 rather than
my Adobe Premiere 6.5. But, I thought I'd throw it out on this chat
group in case anyone else has experienced the same problem.
Thanks again for everyone's help! This group has helped me through
many rough editing patches/glitches in the past.
