Almost... Closed captioning is subtitles that are only visible with a
special decoder. In an NTSC TV signal, closed caption is encoded on
line 21 of the vertical blanking interval. Here's an FAQ page I found
with Google on Closed Captioning... http://www.robson.org/capfaq/.
Click on the "Captioning Overview" link to get good basic information on
captioning.

Good luck,

RESPONSE
Many thanks for that clarification. Sounds very much like the subtitle
facility which is incorporated in the TELETEXT service which is available on
most TV sets here in PAL land. TELETEXT provides multiple pages of info
(programme schedules, stock prices, subtitles) which can be displayed
instead of, or superimposed on, the regular TV picture. The data is carried
on several 'spare' lines in the vertical blanking interval.

The fact that the data is in the VBI suggests that DV would not record it
because, as far as I know, the DV system only records info about the picture
area. My attempts to record TELETEXT on DV have always been unsuccessful.
