Stan,
The center column, the one labeled "Command," tells you the the location 
and the file name of the program being loaded.  When I want to run a 
slimmed down version of XP, I only leave running my soundcard program, 
Zone Alarm (I have a DSL connection), and my anti-virus program.  If you 
want, you can shut off everything in the Startup tab and XP should still 
run okay.  Nothing listed in the Startup tab is critical to Windows 
itself.  However, there are some things in the Services tab which must 
keep running in order to keep XP operational.  Whenever I shut down 
services, I check the "Hide all Microsoft services" box, and start 
shutting off some of the other services.
