It took a while to occur to me, but I've remembered that my situation is not typical of 6.5 users, because, since I started editing in 2000, I've used a Canopus DV Raptor card for capture and play-out to TV. It's a firewire connection but a proprietary one, not useable to connect anything but a camcorder. That is almost certainly why I've never had to switch the camera off to edit or view. I've had it for so long, and moved it from one system to another, I forget it's there.

I've used 6.02 and 6.5 for five years now, connecting to a VCR/TV through firewire to two different Sony camcorders, and RCAs/S-Video from the cam to the VCR, in order to monitor my work, and never had this particular problem. But it's one well worth finding a solution to, because the monitoring path I've described is by far the easiest and cheapest way to see your work on a TV set, which is where most people watch video productions.
