Martin,

If I understand your quandary correctly, you've got the matte clip on track 2
(as either a nested sequence or a clip with matte on 3), and the background
video on 1. And you want the video on 1 to briefly go away and have the entire
clip on 2 to show through without the matte in the center? Is that correct?

Here's what I would do--

1. simply copy the video clip on track 2 and paste it onto a higher track above
it. Make sure the two clips are *perfectly* aligned. But remove any type of
matte effect from the copy on the top most track.

2. Then you can trim the In / Out points of the copy (on the top track) to just
the area that you want it to play full screen without a matte.

Since the top most copy doesn't have a matte, that should allow only it to play
during that brief period, and it will cover up the track 2 matte hole since it
will be on a track above it.

I apologize if I'm completely mangled your request and didn't even come near to
describing the look you are striving for.

  Subject: [AP] mattes

Using 1.5. I want a clip in track-1 to have a "hole" (the hole does
not move) which permits a specific part of a moving track-1 clip to
show through, (viz., a person watching a video -- Track 1). The
position and size of the track-1 clip have to be continually adjusted.

Either image-matte or track-matte works OK -- except when I want the
track-1 clip to disappear briefly, leaving only the track 2 clip. I
can't seem to get that to work.

  Help!!!
