Yeah, it's a weird thing to think that smacking your camera around 
might actually fix it. My Sony A1U had the same error and would 
reject tapes that it previously accepted as sound. I tried hitting it 
with the heel of my palm (it's out of warranty so no free fixes from 
Sony for me), but it didn't work.

Two weeks later, while carrying the A1U in a backpack through an 
airport, the pocket came unzipped and the camcorder fell on the 
concrete with a loud crack. I felt sick. I picked it up, checked it 
out, and not only did it work fine, but I no longer get error C:31:23 
and the camcorder accepts the tapes it previously rejected.

All this said, I think hitting your camcorder is a dicey proposition. 
There are a lot of delicate parts inside that can easily break or 
come out of adjustment. It's weird, though, that this error occurs so 
regularly with Sony camcorders and is often fixed by a sharp smack.
