Yep.  Practical effects are almost always the best route, if you can set them 
up.  I cannot tell you how many times I WISHED we had just thrown a white cloth 
or a black cloth over something in the background...

If it's just a title, I suppose you could simply keyframe a transparency 
border, and as long as the characters pass in front of it fast enough, it'll be 
perfectly fine.  When they do this effect in "real" movies, it's usually a 
little sloppy and usually, people don't care.
