I use the HVX200 with Premiere Pro 2.0 and Matrox AxioHD. Axio provides the
drivers, beginning with AxioUtils 2.5 (released December 2006) to allow
native editing with P2 MXF files. The workflow is amazing and fun! I work
exclusively in 720/24pN shooting mode. Axio supports every shooting mode of
the HVX200 except for the 30p modes. MXF files are transferred from the
camera or P2 Store via USB to the NLE and directly imported to PPro2.

However, assuming you're not using Axio acceleration, you can pull 1080i
and 720/60p (any of the "over 60" shooting modes) from the HVX200 when it's
in 1394 mode and spit it out the firewire port. Use the camera as a
playback deck by putting the camera in VTR mode and directly playing the
files from the camera. Should be captureable into PPro* via a 1394 card of
some sort. Sorry, you won't be able to push any of the "native" shooting
modes out through 1394. They can only be used as MXF files (or via the
HVX200's analog component HD outputs), and that's where you would need an
Axio, Avid, Canopus/Edius or FCP system.

If you had a system that would accept component HD, you could playback
native (24pN) shooting modes from the camera and capture them in a
PPro-like system, but honestly, do yourself a favor and check into (at
least) an AxioLE system so you can get native MXF editing with P2. It
rocks!

*I have tested this method in Axio, which does have a 1394 port in its
breakout box. I was able to capture direct from the P2 camera via firewire
into Premiere Pro. My assumption is that it would work the same into any
non-Axio 1394 capture port.

Axio includes native DVCProHD codecs built in to the system.

Subject: [AP] P2 with Premiere Pro

Does anyone out there have a p2 camera and use premiere pro to edit
with? If so, what is the best way of getting the video from the p2 card
into a format that premiere pro can handle? Do you lose the high def
qualities in the conversion? Thanks so much for any input you can offer.
