John External drives are the only way to fly! Considering internal drives are only capable of 40-60 MB/s transfer speeds, you can achieve MUCH higher transfer speeds (thus allowing more realtime functionality) with external arrays....depending upon drive type, RAID setup, striping, disk controllers etc. My Galaxy HDX (4TB, 16-drive array via dual channel ATTO Celerity FC-42XS fibre channel controller) rips along at 411MB/s read speeds...ideal for multi-stream HD editing.
