No, unfortunately you have to add a color clip. However, you can easily add a new video track as the first track in your sequence, so it's not like you are losing any existing tracks. Also, because the geek in me can't avoid mentioning this -- the background color is not truly black. It's really "empty" in the way that outer space appears "black" because it is empty. (Except for all the quantum foam and dark matter!) Okay, however, yes. I'll admit, it appears black, so for all practical purposes it's black... but let's call it "black-with-a-not-really-asterisk-mark."
