One thing is trying to use MPEG with 6.5. It doesn't
work well at all with any sort of lossy compressed
video. I tried it once on an Athlon XP running at
1.3+ Ghz with 512 megs RAM. That system could toss
around uncompressed video like a kid with a hacky-sack
who'd just drank a 44oz Espresso, but MPEG video
turns Premiere 6.5 into Pre-mire. ;)
It will handle MJPEG (Motion JPEG) where every frame
is a full JPEG image. It'll also work with video
from a Media 100 system, either uncompressed or
compressed with the M100 codec, if you get the free
runtime decoder from Media 100. (Contrary to what
the docs say, the Windows version of the M100 decoder
does do realtime playback.)
