I had much the same problems with a similar
analog-to-digital box (ADS Pyro A/V Link) to the
Canopus. I use this ADS box to capture old 8mm and VHS
analog tapes to DV/Firewire. Here's what finally
worked:
[1] Plug in the A/V box and power it up BEFORE running
Premiere (I have Elements). The computer needs to
"see" that the box is connected to Firewire and
software enabled. Plug in all the analog cables. Turn
on the deck to Stop mode.
[2] Turn on "analog input mode" on the box. My ADS
defaulted to all-digital mode so that faked me out.
[3] Turn OFF device control in Premiere. Otherwise it
thinks it's in control of the box (it ain't!).
[4] (Duh!) Turn on the playback on the analog
deck/camcorder. If you don't see the video now in
Premiere, something is still wrong so don't start
Capture yet.
[5] When giving commands to Premiere, WAIT for the
next command or mode to load. Watch for the disk light
to go out. If you don't do this, there's a tendency to
click the command again, leading to confusion.
I thought my laptop was fast but Premiere really
hobbles it. In particular, when you first light off
"Capture", the screen may need a few seconds to catch
up. I think Premiere gives priority to the disk save
rather than the screen update. Nothing seems lost if
you rewind and replay.
After I did this, I got high quality AVI files. Back
these up (I save on DVD-ROM's) FIRST outside of
Premiere before editing if they're of any value.

Playing out from Pro2 via FireWire

Hello,
I've got a Canopus ADVC100 to play in analogue
video. Clips are converted to
FireWire and ingested through the FW connector on
the PC.
The Canopus will also work the other way around,
ie take a digital output
back up the FireWire cable and convert to analogue
AV for routing to TV/DVD
recorder, whatever.
However, all I get is black screen. I imagine
there is something I need to
set up somewhere in Pro or the PC but haven't a
clue as to what!
Any help much appreciated - Martin
