I've been working on some old home movies in Premiere Pro that had a lot of blown out highlights. I've had good success recovering a lot of the clips using RGB Curves from color correction. In After Effects, I see "Levels (Individual Controls)" from color correction. I'm sure adjusting individual RGB levels in conjunction with the histogram for each channel would be quite similar.
I'm no expert but it may be worth a try.
