I remember reading somewhere that the safe frame is not functional due 
to the Matrox drivers. You'll notice they show up if you use a 
non-Matrox project preset.

I'm not sure about the mp3 issue. Are you giving the machine time to 
conform the audio when you import it?  I always convert any mp3 files to 
wav files before bringing them into the timeline just to be safe. I 
never have problems with audio files unless they are weird sample rates 
or mp3 files.
