Hi Gregg. I've been a bit of a computer geek since '96 so I'm not concerned
about underperforming parts - but I am interested in your
remark about RAM being set up for dual channel. I will check that out. The
core duo proc, Asus board and video card are all solid, modern
gear. One gig of RAM. XP Pro SP2. All drives are 7200 rpm - two internal,
two external LaCie firewire 400.

What's your current CPU?

The RPM of a drive can make a big performance
difference. I have an old PIII 300Mhz laptop that took
approximately five minutes to boot 98SE with its
original 6.4gig 4,200 RPM drive. I got a 40gig 5,400
RPM drive and just that change knocked the boot time
down to under 1.5 minutes.
Is your RAM setup for dual channel?
The motherboard has to have dual channel support and
to enable it the DIMMs must be installed in identical
pairs in the correct slot pairs. (Usually denoted by
different colors.) My current PC originally had 1gig
in one DIMM, the speed boost was noticable when I
swapped that for a pair of 512meg DIMMs to use dual
channel mode.
What videocard?
A slow videocard can be a bottleneck on performance
which can drag everything else down when there's a
wait on the video. When I first got AP 6.5 I was
running a GeForce 3 with 128meg, upgrading to a
GeForce 4 Ti 4200 with 256meg lit a fire under it.
Having the videocard idling along because the CPU
can't throw data at it fast enough is a much better
situation than having the CPU waiting because the
videocard can't keep up!
The hot setup used to be 8x AGP Pro (and hellaciously
expensive!). Now there are mid level PCI Express x16
cards that'll smoke the best 8x AGP Pro card there
ever was, for less money.
