Any opinions on this HVR-V1U ?? I like the idea of connecting this external
unit to capture on a hard drive.

That's how I distribute HD footage: export from Premiere back to my
camcorder in HDV format. Then I give the tape to someone with an HDV
camcorder or deck that can play it back, typically through a
component video connection to an HD monitor that preserves the
high-definition video. S-video or composite video connections require
down-conversion to standard def so they don't work for preserving high-def.

I've heard that many TV networks do *not* accept HDV for
high-definition footage because it's not high-quality enough. (Sony's
is 1440x1080 interlaced instead of 1920x1080 progressive.-) I'm not
exactly sure what formats they do accept, but I've also heard from
one professional who shoots a lot of HD that he thinks you can
convert HDV footage to a more professional format with resultant
quality acceptable to networks. I'd love to know just what formats
those are and what it takes to convert.

None of this is from personal experience, so it would be great to
hear from anyone who's personally gone through this.

I may not have Internet access for a stretch while I'm off for the
holidays, so I'm looking forward to reading more on this thread sometime
later.

Happy holidays all,
