Yeah I have both XH-A1 and HV30. That makes an excellent combo using HV30 as 
B-roll.

Btw, I have high capacity batteries for HV30 and XH-A1 for sale.

Look at the pictures of the sky. Do you see clouds clearly?
That is the difference between the Hi8 and the HV30. 
I've found that if you begin with a very high quality and then reduce
it to Standard Def, you can win in a lot of areas and wind up with a
superior product to that just shot in SD. Example: Skin Tone, Sky
tone, and finally green screen work (way finer edge detail). 

One thing that impressed me about the HV30 is the color, lighting, and
saturation of the images. Overall, very satisfying!

PS: I retired my VX2000 after shooting with an HV20, and then went out
and got an HX-A1 which keeps 2 steps ahead of me all along the way.
