If you don't have a problem capturing or playing back standard DV, I
don't think the problem is going to be in your drive speed. HDV has
the same 25 Mbit/sec data rate as DV, which is only 3.5 MB a sec. I
have never had problems capturing to my 5400 RPM internal system
notebook drive with that kind of data rate (Multiple stream playback
in a project is a different matter). I have little experience with
HDV, but a playback problem is probably related to other hardware
issues in your system, such as processor, memory, and Front-side bus
speed. During playback and editing the system is now having to
decompress that stream into a much higher bandwidth result than is
experienced with SD DV.
