That's why I used vLite with an "Anytime Upgrade" DVD for Vista 32bit to create
a custom install DVD with SP1 integrated. I was able to keep my laptop as an
OEM install by using the Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder to get the OEM key (which
is NOT the one on the label on the outside of the computer!) and making a
backup copy of the c:\windows\system32\OEM folder.
Companies like Dell, Acer, HP etc. use only a few keys for all systems they put
XP or Vista on. Then they put unique keys on the COA labels on the outside of
the system. If you reinstall with that key you have to activate with Microsoft.
XP used a file called OEMBIOS.BIN, there's a utility at msfn.org to check your
XP install and PC then install the correct OEMBIOS.BIN file (which you download
from another site). If you've used the original OEM key for your PC, don't have
to activate XP.
vLite can put the install key into the installation so the user doesn't have to
enter it. I made a batch file that when run after installing Windows, copies
the OEM folder to the proper place then runs the script command to reinstall
the OEM license file.
Doing this saves a bunch of space because there's no backup files for
uninstalling SP1 and things I don't want or need like the Sidebar aren't
installed at all.
