Hi all. The forwarded message below was sent in for approval, by one of our members, Richard Peoples.
Rieni has given his approval and this in our opinion is a serious matter which goes along with our anti-spam agenda, so I am happy to post it here for all to see and I have posted it on many other forums. I am not advocating any course of action, that is a matter for individual members. Suffice to say that I have 'opted out'. :-) The message is off-topic, but has been well received elsewhere. If you don't like it, please delete and ignore. Thanks Richard. I believe that many people will be indebted to you. If you belong to ANY Yahoo Groups - be aware that Yahoo is now using "Web Beacons" to track every Yahoo Group user. It's similar to cookies, but allows Yahoo to record every website and every group you visit, even when you're not connected to Yahoo. Look at their updated privacy statement at http://info.yahoo.com/privacy/us/yahoo/details.html About half-way down the page, in the section on *cookies*, you will see a link that says *WEB BEACONS*. Click on the phrase "Web Beacons." On the page that opens, on the left find a box entitled "Opt-Out." In that section find "opt-out of interest-matched advertising" link that will let you "opt-out" of their snooping. Click it and then click the opt-out button on the next page. Note that Yahoo's invasion of your privacy - and your ability to opt-out of it - is not user-specific. It is MACHINE and BROWSER specific. That means you will have to opt-out on every computer (and browser) you use. Please forward this to your other groups. You might complain, too, but I'm not sure if anyone is listening. I remember when they signed all users up to get spam and we had to opt out of that a few years ago. Related article: http://antivirus.about.com/od/spywareandadware/a/yahoobugs.htm One word of caution is that if anyone uses a "temp files" cleaner program or any program that removes "cookies" from your computer you will automatically be opted back in. Yahoo is basically turning the tracking to ON all the time and the only way to turn it off is to let them place a cookie on your computer telling them not to track anything. It's not that big of a deal but something to remember every time you clean or remove cookies off your machine. . Here's some info from their NAI partnership... ==================== The NAI Opt-out Tool is cookie-based. In order for the Tool to work on your computer, your browser must be set to accept third party cookies. If you buy a new computer, change web browsers or delete this cookie, you will need to perform the opt-out task again. http://networkadvertising.org/managing/opt_out.asp Best Regards and Happy New Year, Richard Peoples [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
