Adriane:

I recently bought an HC9 for pretty much the same reason. I had just
purchased a Sony Z7 ($5k+) and didn't want to kill it capturing
tapes. At the time I bought the HC9 (in Dec 2009) it was being
discontinued by Sony.... Ooops! I see Sony changed their mind and
un-discontinued it!

In that case - I'm pretty happy with the HC9. I've only used it once
for "real" (to play with the Manfrotto ModoSteady) but I was
favorably impressed with the picture and sound for such an
inexpensive and tiny camera. (Oops on the inexpensive! I got mine
for $849 - but I see B&H is selling them for list again! $1099!)

B&H shows only 3 MiniDV cameras: The Canon HV40, & ZR960 & the
Sony. As the Canon is only $650, if I had to buy today I would buy
it rather than the Sony at $1100. (I've never used one, but have
seen many positive comments online.)

However, if all you're worried about is reading SD MiniDV tapes then
the ZR960 is probably the best bet ($250). [ I also bought a Sony
HC52 just when Sony discontinued it - _their_ last plain MiniDV
camera and my backup digitizer 'deck'.... since I just found that I
have something like 250 DV tapes, I'm glad I have multiple cameras
that can read them.]

[[Tangent: If you _do_ have multiple DV cameras, get a copy of
Scenalyzer - it lets you run multiple instances to capture from
multiple cameras at the same time - I've had 4 running at once with
no problems.]]
