Lee, thanks for this. I have not tried it to speed up preview rendering
BUT it generally helps with previewing without rendering .

I did the following test on my not powerful enough computer.
I put three AVCHD clips on top of each other and reduced the size of the 
upper two to
make them picture in picture.
Playing the timeline at FULL playback resolution the picture immediately 
jammed.
After changing the playback resolution to 1/4 it played smoothly and the 
picture
still looked good.
This will help me nicely until I can afford my super computer.
