I do not think that is correct.

On a PC OnLocation can only be used with cameras with a Firewire port 
for DV and HDV.

AVCHD cameras which are mostly (if not all) recording on HDD or card can 
not be used
as they do not have firewire.
I may be wrong but I think it will record in the same format that comes 
from the camera.
If a DV camera is used it will record AVI as it did with my PD170.
My new cameras do unfortunately not have firewire so I can no longer try 
anything anymore.

Premiere does also not "require" .m2t files, you can edit just about 
anything.

Maybe someone who is using OnLocation can clarify this
