I realize that I am late to the dance here, but for my video editing
machine, I always build it myself and do minor updates as I need to and a
major update (rebuild) about every two years. My old video machine becomes
my new audio machine. My experience is a little different in that careful
tracking has shown me that no matter what I do the software (Premiere Pro
CS6 and AE) simply never demands more than about 14 Gigs of memory. I have
32 , but I have never seen it used. I've come to believe that 16 is
adequate for just about anything. Hard drive speed (SSD) and the GPU speed
both matter a great deal. I use a RAID approach with SSDs and the best
graphics card I can currently afford. Right now I have dual 580s with 3
gigs of DDR5 each. The Mercury engine seems to love them. AE works in real
time about 95 percent of the time. Without spending insane amounts of
money, I think this is the best performance I can get. My machine prices
out at about 2200 dollars and gives me 98 percent of the performance I
could get with a 12,000 dollar machine.

I'm happy with it.
