Couldn't wait to post the first results, even though the code needs a little more work before being ready to commit.
Running worldtest with the SDL 1.2 software rendering, on my desktop (2.5GHz Core 2) in fullscreen at 1152 x 864 (blasted nvidia drivers don't recognize the true resolution) E0219 18:46:14.464530 5190 worldtest.cc:273] Rendered 968 frames in 15065 ms. E0219 18:46:14.464575 5190 worldtest.cc:274] Average time required per frame is 15.56 ms. And now the same exercise with SDL 1.3 and OpenGL rendering: E0219 18:52:30.549450 8472 worldtest.cc:273] Rendered 686 frames in 678 ms. E0219 18:52:30.549507 8472 worldtest.cc:274] Average time required per frame is 0.9883 ms. Certainly puts a smile on my face :-). There's one issue open, though: http://lists.libsdl.org/pipermail/sdl-libsdl.org/2011-February/079683.html I do hope that there will be a solution for this in the near future, otherwise I'll have to think of something. Anyway, I got a few bits and pieces to clean up, then I can merge stuff into master. Once its tested and fixed to work on big endian too, I will finally have to move to more boring work in order to get the Waste's Edge re-release back on track.
