Backup over WAN

We are in process to add client software , on some clients in another sites ,
and we will be using T1 lines for that , but before sending data
to server , client compresses data ,
So question .
1. How to evaluate TSM compression  algoritham  to send data over WAN.

is anybody using this type of backup? what is experiance , that is backup time
/restore time?
