Geoff - Your backup speed of 1 MB/sec indicates that you're getting about as much as
        you can from a lowly 10Mb ethernet card (which is hopefully running at full
duplex, not half).
    One thing I'd obviously be concerned about from the numbers: You say this was
a disk restoral; but some 9000 files were restored whereas the backup indicates
there were about 10x as many before.
