We back up our .75 TB AFS cell using ADSM, and hopefully soon TSM.

In short, backing up AFS is painful no matter how you do it... Backup by
volume (using the *SM replacement for butc) is fast, but can easily
consume a LOT of *SM storage space.  To do backup by file properly, you
need to keep a list of mount points and have a backup server (or set of
clients) that has a lot of memory so that you can use an AFS memory cache.
I assure you, using a disk cache will take forever.

for about 2 years for AFS as well as Novell and NT servers.
