Update on our LTO via SAN Data Gateway.
Apparently this boiled down to the Qlogic driver installed on the server.
According to the IBM folks, this driver had been installed incorrectly. I
assume a removal and correct install fixed the problem. Based on that, I'll
take my "hold onto your SAN Data Gateway" off this configuration.
This is excellent news.

We're using TSM 4.1.2 with the LTO 3584 library (5 drives), SAN connected
via SCSI gateways also.
As far as the LTO and TSM combination, I'm almost perfectly satisfied.
Performance is great (my TSM server is an H80 w/ 500GB SSA disk for storage
pools and dual Gigabit Ethernet to our LAN). My only real complaint is a
driver issue that won't allow me to unload 10 tapes at a time... Unless I
just haven't figured it out yet...

We have, but our SAN switches/Gateways are IBM re-badges so we had them
"make it work".
There are still issues, but they are limitations of drivers at the client
OS.
TSM system: AIX 4.3.3 (TSM 4.1.2)
Library: 3584, 4 drives, SAN connected via SCSI Gateway
So far, it's flying along quite happily.
