Congrats! I'll follow the same method if should I come across enough time
to do an inventory on the 3494. Ours is hooked to os/390(many lpars),
multiple rs/6k, and multiple as/400 machines. Finding or scheduling time
is difficult. Now should the 3494 break....Hmmm......

Nonetheless, I view the 3494's INability to tell me what is in a slot a
huge oversight in its' design.

     Well,

It turned out to be an easy one. Courtsey, Richard and Adolph.

     I did the following:

     1. PAUSE the library.

     2. Made the Volume READONLY. ( So that I don't write accidentally on
     the volume)

     3. Mount the volume in one of drives.

     4. Issued the command:

     # dd if=/dev/rmt0 of=/tmp/volser conv=ascii ( conv=ascii is does the
     trick)

I gave the VOLSER right on the top.

     5. Pasted the volumes with labels and checked in again

     Regards

     Mahesh

     Thanks Richard / Adolph,

If I use "Insert Unlabelled Cartridge" function , wouldn't it
     overright the existing label. ?

In fact I did manulally mount the tape in the drive and invoked
tapeutil , but couldn't find any way to read the VOLSER.

     Regards,

     Mahesh

If you go to the 3494 console (Library Manager) and select the Insert
Unlabeled Cartridge function. Now you give it a volser - pick something
that will not already be in the library - follow the instructions on this
panel. This should allow you to put this cartridge back into the library,
under the "new volser". Now try to use tapeutil to mount this cartridge
into a drive and read the volser.

I've done this in the past from OS/390 - I've not tried this with AIX.

     Freinds,

Unfortunately , I have few PRIVATE volumes with labels peeled off from
them . There used to have labels but probabaly due to excessive use
     the labels are peeled off.

After , reinventoring the Library , these volumes were forced out on
the convenience station with description ' VOLSER not readable'.

Now, how can I know the label of that volume so that I can paste it
with the paper label and then can check in.

As soon as I try to put these volumes in the library they are ejected
out , again with the same message that 'VOLSER not readable.

I have tried , CE utilities of 3590 E drive as well as tapeutil
     commands but of no help.

     My Environment is:

     AIX 4.3

     TSM 3.7.4.0

     3490 Libraray

     3590 E Magstar Tape Drive.

Any hint shall be greatly appreciated.

     Regards
