Yes, you had it working but not in usual way. Look at TSM for AIX Quick

rmt0 is of type "tape":
$ lsdev -Cc tape
rmt0 Available 10-80-00-1,0 5.0 GB 8mm Tape Drive
mt0 is of type "adsmtape":
$ lsdev -Cc adsmtape
mt0 Available 10-80-00-1,0 Tivoli Storage Manager Tape Drive
Used in this manner TSM is able to fully interact with the device. For
example you do not have /dev/mt0.1, /dev/mt0.2, etc. TSM uses all this
functionality through /dev/mt0.

Nope. Remember, I had it working on this machine earlier as /dev/rmt0.
I had actually tried this, and the define drive worked, but TSM could not
access the tape. It kept failing because there were "too few mount
points".
