This is a known performance degradation. Remember the SAN connection only
writes 1 thread at a time; whereas the LAN can create up to 5, I believe.
So if you are running file system saves with very small files the LAN will
work better. The meta data goes down the LAN interface in either case.

Your next question will be why don't they multi-thread the data to the tape
drive. I can tell you that you that other products do this and it sounds
great until you go to duplicate the tapes for offsite. The performance is
horrible.

So, the answer is you have to use the right tool for the job. File Servers
with small files, Gigabit LAN may be a better answer. Large files and TDPs
for databases like SAN.

Subject: TDP for R3 on AIX with SAN

 Hi all...

I have the following: AIX 4.3.3 ML 9, TSM Server 4.2.0 TSM Client 4.2.0, TDP
for SAP R3 Oracle 3.2.0.6 and the Storage Agent 4.2.0 in a SAN environmet
using McData Director ED-5000 and LTO 3584 connected to McData ES-1000. The
McData4s are interconnected.

When the Backup/Archive Client uses the SAN the performance is excellent,
but when the TDP uses the SAN the performance is the worst. Using TDP, the
SAN backup time is greater than LAN backup time.

What kind of tuning is necessary to do?. What results do you have using this
environment?

TIA
