Subject: TDP for ESS
L&g
Currently we have a 1.5Tb (70 volumes) SAP client backing up (directly) to
tape.
We would like to use TDP for ESS i.e. flashcopy for such (large) clients.
If I understand correctly flashcopy (with COPY option) works as follows:
* flashcopy initiation (establishing pairs) for 70 volumes .......
this only takes 2 3 seconds per volume.
* then in the background the actual copy takes place.
How long does this background process take ?? What does this mean for
performance during SAP transactions ??
* during this background process you could already start backing up
(the copy volumes) to tape !!!?
Is this true ??
>>> Yes, but you are adding load to the Shark, so you may want to wait for
about an hour, my estimate for this may flashcopy volumes to complete.
Otherwise you are just stressing the production environment even more.
* how to recover from a SAP database corruption without restoring from
tape ??
because the COPY option was used you can perform a 'flashback'
......?
it would be nice to have a kind of "TDP for ESS Restore" cause TDP
for ESS
nowadays is only focused on Backup !!!
>>> The flash restore task can be setup easily. The backup process is a lot
more than just a flashcopy. It gathers all kinds of configuration data to
figure out what is where. The flashback is a unmount, flashcopy restore,
mount. But this cannot be done until the flashcopy backup has completed.
In our SAP world it has hooks to stuff all over the place so our restore is
a lot bigger than just SAP because the stuff is all synchronized together.
Do you have the same issues? It is worse for me because my SAP environment
is on Solaris and there is not a TDP for ESS on Solaris yet, though it is
just a bunch of scripts anyway.
