Shared dynamic won't affect the backup of an open PST file because Outlook
opens the file for exclusive use.

You can use the Open File Manager from St. Bernard to back up .pst files.

A useful free add-on from Microsoft reminds the user to back up their
folders periodically. The file pfbackup.exe is available from
http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2002/pfbackup.aspx. It's a passive
utility that will allow a user to cancel the backup reminder without
performing the backup, so you can't be certain that it's going to happen.
Another downside is that it creates a backup.pst file that is as large as
the original - in fact it's a copy of the folders - with no compression.

Subject: PST Files and TSM Backups

There has been a lot of discussion about PST files and backups. The subfile
backup is very helpful, but also if your users will empty the deleted items
folder of the PST and compress the things that dramatically reduces their
sizes. I do it all the time. Unfortunately, there is no way to do this
automatically that I have seen yet.

As for using subfile backups I am glad to here of success for desktops on
recovery and backup improvement.

Our biggest problem is our users leave their OUTLOOK open so we miss backing
up these PSTs on the server. Has anyone tried allowing TSM to backup these
files SHARED DYNAMIC?
