renaming volumes

Hi, 
I have about 40 cartridges (3570) volumed in a strange naming convention and 
they all contain data. Now I like to rename all of them with barcode labels. 
Is it possible to rename a FULL volume without interfering the data or do I 
have 
to move the data and use "label libv" command?
