/var on  AIX can have a lot of temporary files, print files and mail spool
files etc.  A file is there when TSM gets list of files to back up and is gone
when actually tries to backup.  I don't worry about.  I like to backup up
/var anyhow as there is stuff there worth saving  (cron jobs, for instance).
