This is a retryable failure, subject to the RETRY parameter in the init<SID>.utl file. 'Gracefull' is somewhat subject to interpretation - backint (TDP for R/3) will start over on the failed file. If you're using multiplexing you'll restart ALL the files in the multiplex stream.
The easiest way to test this is to start a backup in your test environment and then update the output tape to a 'readonly' status. TSM will fail the additional writes to the volume and dismount it, and you'll see the backint errors and recovery on the test environment side.
