Dan, You can put a copy pool and a primary pool on the same library without splitting it. I do that with my 4-drive HP DLT library.
Unless you're using the new (5.1) feature to simultaneously write primary and copy tapes, there should be little drive contention, especially with the number of drives you have. Our primary pool receives data during the night, and the copypool receives data during the day. We are still using 4.1.
