Kurt, Actually, you CAN "snapshot" SQL and Exchange databases using the Symmetrix Integration Utilities from EMC. These create a "cold" file image of the database on the business continuance volume(s) (BCV's) that are allocated on the SAN. To back those BCV's up to TSM, you then need to mount the BCV to a client that TSM recognizes and do a file backup from there. This should also be doable as a lan-free process using sanergy, (SAN to SAN copy) but I haven't tried that yet. You didn't say (or I missed) whether your LTO's are fibre attached to the SAN. If they are, then you can do a lan-free backup of a BCV direct to tape now without using sanergy and only pass the metadata about the backup to the TSM database via LAN.
That said, I don't see the utility of backing up BCV's to tape if the TDP backups of Exchange and/or SQL are working well. Our recovery from TDP backups have always been quick and trouble free. That's why I haven't wanted to substitute a cold file recovery from a restored BCV. It seems like a lot more trouble to me. The real value of the BCV snapshots is for a quick recovery directly from the BCV on disk. If this sounds confusing, let me know and I can maybe clarify. -----Original Message----- From: Kurt Beyers To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 10/9/2002 10:35 AM Subject: Re: TSM 5.1 EMC Timefinder SAN Ok, so it is not possible to take an online snapshot backup of MS SQL and Exchange. Good to know. How about the LAN-free backup? Can you create a diskpool on the SAN so that the backup of the clients (connected to the SAN as well) goes via the SAN directly to the diskpool (and later by migration to the LTO tape pool). Can you take concurrently a backup of multiple clients to the same SAN diskpool? What TSM license are required to take a LAN-free backup?
