If a backupset is expired, the ONLY way one can recover it is by restoring the DATABASE to a previous date. You do not want to do this.
Change the retention date to a date that is confortable to you or to
nolimit, and delete it manually whenever you wish.

Dear TSMers,
I am using backupsets for remote archiving purposes. As you already now we
state "retention period"
while creating them. Is there a method to put them "pending" state and
delete
them under my control after this retention period?
Because i feel that they will expire automatically (after the period) and
it is
difficult to watch "expire inventory" results and check
the expired backupsets and return them back. Any help appreciated...
